All the Ways We Mother: A Salt Barre Reflection on Fertility, Adoption, and Redefining Roles

At The Salt Barre, our community is full of strength, sweat, laughter – and stories. This Mother’s Day, we’re opening space for something deeper: a moment of connection for the many ways we mother.

Some of us are just beginning, some are knee-deep in carpools and chaos, and some are learning how to find purpose later in motherhood. Whether your journey to motherhood has been clear or complex, joyful or painful, immediate or still unfolding, we see you.

Today, we’re sharing the words of the three women in ownership on our Salt Barre team. Each story is different, yet all speak to the unshakable love, resilience, and community that define what it means to mother – no matter where you are on the path.

Alyssa’s Story: Finding Peace in the In Between

Alyssa’s journey began with loss. One miscarriage. Then another. Then another. By her third, she found herself in deep emotional pain – grieving, searching, and advocating for answers.

She tried everything to support her body and mind: acupuncture, yoga, meditation, reiki. And while her test results always came back “normal,” her grief was anything but. Her healing came in layers—and in connection. Opening up to Michele and Katie helped her realize she wasn’t alone.

Her journey stretched across years, through four devastating miscarriages, and a sea of uncertainty. But also through resilience, surrender, and profound trust in her body and spirit.

In the summer of 2023, after shifting her care and receiving holistic support, Alyssa conceived again. This time, she carried her daughter to term – welcoming her into the world in the spring of 2024.

“I still wonder if we’ll be able to carry another healthy pregnancy,” she says, “but I also know how blessed we are to have our daughter.”

She shares this reflection often in her classes:

“Transitions between poses are more important than the poses themselves.”

Because in those uncertain in-betweens – the waiting, the trying, the heartbreak – she learned how to mother herself, how to be present, and how to lean into community.

Katie’s Story: Embracing the Unplanned Path to Motherhood

Katie’s journey started with optimism and expectations – marriage, careers, a house, a dog. Naturally, kids would follow. Except…they didn’t.

Month after month passed. No diagnosis. No pregnancy. Just silence, uncertainty, and growing grief.

She remembers the sting of questions from well-meaning people: “Are you planning on having kids?” – a question that echoed like a whisper of what she didn’t yet have. After years of fertility treatments and unending “not yets,” a conversation at a party offered her something she hadn’t felt in a long time: hope.

That hope opened the door to adoption. And through divine timing and an unshakable belief in her purpose as a mother, Katie became one – twice. Her sons, Chase and Cash, are now 22 and 14. Their stories are etched into her heart.

“I forget, truly forget, that they were adopted,” she shares. “That’s how deeply woven they are into our family.”

Katie’s story is a reminder that motherhood doesn’t always arrive the way we imagined – but it always arrives with purpose.

Michele’s Story: Redefining Purpose After the Nest is Empty

From a young age, Michele longed to be a mother. After facing heartbreak through miscarriages and fertility challenges, she was blessed with three children – three little miracles who became her world. She savored every moment, from school drop-offs to chaotic sports schedules, knowing how lucky she was to be in the thick of it all.

But, as all mothers know, time moves fast. Her kids grew up, moved away, and Michele found herself in a new season of life: the empty nest. With time on her hands and a deep love still to give, she turned inward and asked a powerful question – what now?

That answer became The Salt Barre.

Creating this community helped her rediscover purpose and joy in a new way. Through the studio, Michele continues to care for others – not as a diaper-changer or lunch-packer, but as a space holder, a guide, and a light for others finding their way.

“I discovered a renewed sense of joy and a way to connect with my children as they navigate adulthood,” she says. “Reinventing myself has enriched my life and helped me become a more present mother.”

A Shared Thread: Community Heals

These stories…different as they may be…are all woven together by one truth: motherhood takes many forms. It’s not always linear. It’s not always easy. And it rarely looks how we expected.

But one thing is always true: we aren’t meant to walk these paths alone.

At The Salt Barre, we believe in the power of shared stories and sacred spaces. Whether you’re just starting your motherhood journey, in the heart of raising little ones, exploring adoption, grieving losses, or rediscovering your purpose after the kids are grown, we’re here for you.

We invite you to show up exactly as you are. With your grief. With your joy. With your in-between.

Because all of it matters. And all of it belongs.
