For so many of us, fitness has felt like a cycle.
Start strong.
Push hard.
Burn out.
Stop.
Repeat.
That was Sara’s story, too.

“I’ve had an on-again/off-again relationship with fitness and movement since I was in my teens,” she shared. “Before coming to Salt Barre in January 2025, I was very much in a long-term off-again phase.”
Like many people, Sara grew up seeing movement as something she had to do — usually tied to appearance, trends, or short-term motivation.
“I participated in a lot of health and fitness trends over the years (going all the way back to Tae Bo in the late 90s 😅). Movement was really something I felt like I had to do, usually because I wanted to look good. I’d push myself hard for a short period of time and slip right back into old habits. Rest days turned into rest weeks, months, etc.”
Sound familiar?
A Turning Point
Everything shifted when Sara entered her 40s.
“Starting off my 40s with a debilitating pinched nerve really gave me a new perspective on the importance of movement.”
She walked into The Salt Barre in January of last year not looking for a quick fix — but for a healthier, more balanced way to live.
“I came in with a focus on improving my overall health, both physically and mentally. Just over a year later, maintaining my health has become my priority.”
What changed wasn’t just what she was doing — but how she was thinking about it.
“I approached movement with a totally different attitude AND I started choosing movement that brings me joy (honestly, I used to think this concept was made up by fitness influencers!).”
Strength + Recovery: The Missing Piece
One of the biggest shifts for Sara was discovering the balance between challenging her body and supporting it.
“When I was doing more strength-based classes, incorporating yoga in between really helped with soreness, especially early on. I loved that my rest days still involved gentle movement that actually benefited my body.”
Instead of an all-or-nothing approach, she found a rhythm:
“I felt stronger without feeling depleted — which meant I was able to show up more consistently to the more intense classes, rather than just being sore and taking a few days off.”
That balance became even more important when life threw her a curveball.
“Because of a recent shoulder injury, I am currently taking a recovery-based approach. A typical week for me involves PT-based strength training, walking a few times a week, and a few gentle/yin yoga classes.”
And here’s the part we love most:
“For me, ‘recovery’ is staying active — but doing so within my limits.”
A Whole New Relationship with Movement
Sara’s relationship with exercise today looks nothing like it used to.
“It no longer feels forced or like a punishment. It is genuinely something I want to do because it makes me feel good.”
And even on hard days, movement has become a source of grounding instead of guilt.
“I have walked into many Salt Barre classes after a stressful day feeling completely miserable… but I have never walked back out of a class feeling that way.”
Of course, she’s human. Rest still happens.
“I still have days when I’m mentally and physically exhausted and all I want to do is exist on the couch. And that’s okay. My biggest success is that days like that don’t turn into weeks or months anymore.”
The Big Question: Rest or Strength?
We asked Sara:
What would you tell someone who feels torn between ‘needing rest’ and ‘wanting to feel strong’?
Her answer says it all:
“The reality is: you can’t be the strongest version of yourself without resting. Your body literally needs time to break down muscle and rebuild it. So take TRUE rest when you need it — and incorporate gentler movement and active rest into your routine to avoid burnout.”
That is exactly what The Salt Barre is all about:
Movement that strengthens you
without draining you.
Consistency without burnout.
Progress that feels good — not punishing.
Sara’s journey is proof that balance isn’t just possible.
It’s sustainable.
And it changes everything.
