Float Therapy Benefits Pregnancy

While every pregnancy experience is different, most people who have been pregnant will tell you about the many many discomforts and ailments as you’re growing a tiny human.

You may notice more hip pain, back aches, headaches, round ligament pain and many more!

And if a lack of sleep is something you’re struggling with before baby comes, floating may be just what you’re looking for.

The Right Props

Most people float on their backs, but while pregnant, this may not be the most comfortable depending on how far along you are. At The Salt Barre we have the perfect props for you! A headrest float for your neck and a pool noodle so you can lie on your side and place the noodle between your legs. Just like those pregnancy pillows we use at night!

The Benefits

Float tanks consist epsom salt or magnesium and sulfate more specifically. According to the Universal Health Institute, soaking in an Epsom Salt bath is one of the most effective means of making the magnesium your body needs readily available. In the hospital, supplemental calcium-magnesium is often given for various pregnancy ailments, and they may provide an IV of magnesium sulfate to stop preterm labor. How cool to know!

So some of the other benefits this can provide you include:

  • Decreased Swelling: Floating takes the pressure off your joints, which is in-it-self already a wonderful sensation. That reduction of pressure can also help reduce edema or prevent swelling.
  • Lower Blood Pressure: Blood pressure is closely related to stress levels, so it makes sense to think that the deep relaxation state you can achieve in the float tank could help lower it. But in addition to the relaxation, when your body is relieved from the burden of gravity your blood vessels can fully dilate, reducing blood pressure and increasing blood flow.
  • Reduce Stress: Floating takes the pressure off your physical body by allowing you to be effortlessly suspended in the water and relieving muscle strain, but it also decreases stress emotionally and mentally. There’s nothing your body and mind need to “do” while in the tank besides relaxing.
  • Bonding with Baby: When you turn the lights off and allow your mind and body to drift into deep relaxation, you can often hear your own heartbeat and even your baby’s heartbeat. While listening to those sounds it’s easy to imagine the experience of the baby inside the uterus, which allows for a very special connection.

Bonus Tip!

Before floating, make sure you snack! We need lots more fuel while pregnant, and sometimes an hour is too long to wait. Snack beforehand, and bring something for afterward, especially if you’re experiencing nausea.
