Men Can Benefit from Yoga, too!

Typically men don’t think of yoga as “their thing”. Outside of athletes that know the benefits and men that are focused on their mental health and longevity of their bodies, most yoga classes in the US consist of mainly women.

But men can REALLY benefit from yoga!

Extends Range of Motion

Men have certain muscles that are the main targets of exercises at the gym. These include the hamstrings, glutes, abs and shoulders. However, these muscles can only be trained to a certain limit. When men focus on certain exercises such as weightlifting, the repetitive and monotonous movements only affect certain groups of muscles. And in the long run, this will restrain the muscles’ range of motion and growth.

Think about it – when lifting weights, the muscle belly contracts. If you don’t stretch it during recovery, over time, it keeps getting shorter and shorter, making that range of motion smaller so you’re actually weaker over time.

A flexible muscle is a strong muscle and it’s all a balance between strengthening and stretching.

In addition to lengthening range of motion, yoga helps to correct mobility issue and imbalances in the body that can lead to weaker muscles and joints, and even greater mobility issues in the long run.

Improves Breathing

Improved breathing is a benefit to athletes as well! When we can increase our lung capacity, we can exert more efficient energy on a run, during a lift, or on a hike. Learning to breathe in a more controlled and efficient manner also helps to lower insomnia and blood pressure. It even increases energy. So why not try it?
